Carry Crosses On Your Head

The MNL Sta. Cruz is the second release from our ongoing MNL District Series, which was started this year to pay tribute to some of Manila’s famous districts. Sta. Cruz is one of the most historic places in Manila, dating back before Spanish colonials arrived in the Philippines. The area soon transformed from its humble beginnings of marshlands, patches of greenery and rice fields to one of the busiest and most preferred residential and commercial locations during the 19th century, due to its close proximity to the Pasig River that allowed ships to load and unload passengers and freight.

This cap features the MNL Logo in thick white embroidery with a custom cross-print pattern for the crown. The cross pattern is the result of a wordplay on the Spanish term ‘Santa Cruz’ which directly translates to ‘Holy Cross’. The name Sta. Cruz was given by the Jesuit priests who established the Sta. Cruz Parish in June 20, 1619. To this day, the church serves as both a famous historical landmark and a place of religious importance to locals and tourists alike. The other features of this cap are brown (including a brown leather strapback), reminiscent of wood, to signify the importance of this color and material in many historic and modern churches all over the world.

We’ll be dropping this cap in Sta. Cruz TONIGHT! (August 31, 2013) Check out the posters and details in this blog entry, and here is the map to Sta. Cruzin‘! Keep checking for updates on our official facebook page! See you there! -WIP

Ian's Birthday Double Drop

The WIP Cats came through to bring some fun at The Deck of Ronac Art Center two Saturdays ago to celebrate the birthday of one of their top cats Ian Sermonia and at the same time the release of their Nick Automatic Glider and MNL Tondo @ UNSCHLD.

It's good to have events going on at the deck again after being reported to the brgy office by some residents around the area for being too loud. You just can't kick out the life of the deck. News is we are about to soundproof the deck so that we can turn it up on full blast next time. Haha! Anyway it was a fun night and there were performances by Toney Chrome of 187 Mobstaz, Tondo Tribe, Tempes, B.A.M. and yours truly. I shared 2 new tracks from my upcoming mixtape with SPNZ called Hit The Spot. Something that y'all should watch out for in the next few months.

WIP Pays Tribute

The owners of WIP Caps pay tribute to two of their favorite hiphop groups that they grew up listening to, Blackstar & The Wutang Clan.
Black Star arose from the underground movement of the late 1990s, which was in large part due to Rawkus Records, an independent record label stationed in New York City. They released one album, Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star on August 26, 1998. The record received critical acclaim, but only moderate commercial success. Black Star (and other members of the Native Tongues Posse) helped shape underground alternative rap, bringing it into the mainstream. Both Mos Def and Talib Kweli have gone on to greater commercial and critical success in their solo careers.
The distinctive sound of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) created a blueprint for hardcore hip hop during the 1990s and helped return New York City hip hop to national prominence. Its sound also became hugely influential in modern hip hop production, while the group members' explicit, humorous, and free-associative lyrics have served as a template for many subsequent hip hop records. Serving as a landmark record in the era of hip hop known as the East Coast Renaissance, its influence helped lead the way for several other East Coast hip hop artists, including Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., Mobb Deep, and Jay-Z. Despite its raw, underground sound, the album had surprising chart success, peaking at number 41 on the US Billboard 200 chart. By 1995, it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipments of one million copies in the United States. Initially receiving positive reviews from most music critics, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) has been regarded by music writers as one of the most significant albums of the 1990s, as well as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all-time.

Handang-handa

So by now I'm sure you've heard about what happened last Saturday at B-Side and I'm also sure that you've heard a bunch of different versions to the story. Sometimes situations pop off and we couldn't really do anything to stop them. Always try to take the better route because at the end of the day you should know that you are responsible for your actions and the consequences that go along with them. It sucks when these consequences hinder the bigger picture.
